‘Voy a poner en la tierra un representante (Jalifa)’.
Dijeron:
‘¿Vas a poner en ella a quien la corromperá
y derramará sangre,
mientras nosotros te glorificamos y
santificamos?’
Él dijo:
"Yo sé lo que vosotros no sabéis".

De modo que el "depósito confiado", la conciencia espiritual de nuestro lugar en la creación, es tanto una carga como una bendición. Y somos injustos porque nos desprendemos de la "carga" con alegre ignorancia. Pero Él sabe algo sobre el ser humano que los ángeles desconocen...y eso nos baste por hoy.
Debería continuar por las calles de Jiva y hablar de sus Janes. De la historia de su minarete de azul turquesa achatado y que debía medir unos 70 u 80 metros de altura y al final se quedó en 29. De como la forma de la ciudad es, en realidad, relativamente moderna: una construcción que se configuró entre los siglos XVI y XIX. Pero ya iremos hablando.
Por hoy se despide el narrador

I got lost the first night through the streets of Khiva, as the poem says. Everything had been illuminated, giving the atmosphere a magical feeling. It was as if the mist and dust that still lingered had themselves been lit from within. All this lent a mysterious charm to the night and to the buildings. They seemed to emerge softly, almost vaporous and somewhat intangible, despite their solemnity and solidity.
Were there really forty kings? In reality, forty is a symbolic number. It represents a historical continuity that goes back to the prophet Shem, the son of Noah. Forty signifies the completion of a great cycle of maturation and realization. In the case of the human being, it represents the arrival at full adulthood. It is said that from the age of forty onward all cosmic laws begin to act upon a person in such a way that the pressure becomes greater. If we have not prepared ourselves for this, we will suffer the consequences of our immaturity because we will simply remain childish and incapable of assuming our responsibilities.
But the city is also the matrix; it is the context of our realization. The “forty kings” signify the fact of having reached this maturity. Since ancient Egypt this maturity has been conceived as a kind of uterine center that nourishes us and allows us to develop so as to reach our fullness.
Khiva is conceived as the place where this maturity was sustained by a principle grounded in an aristocratic vision. Here “aristocratic” means a principle of spiritual hierarchy that connects the different levels of existence, where the “kings” are a symbolic element reminding us of that connection. In the context of the traditional Islamic city, whose model lies in the Medina of Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him), it is also the place where the communal dimension is realized as a repository of barakah. In fact, the word barakah comes from the Arabic—thus Semitic—root ب ر ك (B-R-K), which carries the meaning of “something that settles or comes to rest,” “something that remains,” “a blessing that establishes itself in a place or a person.” Interestingly, it is also related to the way a camel sits or kneels in a place to rest or stop. Thus the city, the well, and the human being are receptacles of barakah, and this appears in the Qur’an as a gentle rain of Compassion and Mercy that revives the earth.
But there is a paradox. The Qur’an also says the following:
We offered the Trust (al-amāna) to the heavens, the earth, and the mountains,
but they refused to bear it and were afraid of it.
Yet the human being undertook it.
Truly he is most unjust and most ignorant.
Surah 33:72, Al-Aḥzāb (The Confederates)
And elsewhere:
And when your Lord said to the angels:
“I will place upon the earth a representative (khalifa).”
They said:
“Will You place therein one who will cause corruption and shed blood,
while we glorify You with praise and sanctify You?”
He said:
“Indeed, I know what you do not know.”
Surah 2:30, Al-Baqarah (The Cow)
Thus the “entrusted deposit,” the spiritual awareness of our place in creation, is both a burden and a blessing. We are unjust because we cast off this “burden” with cheerful ignorance. Yet He knows something about the human being that the angels do not know… and that will suffice for today.
I should continue wandering through the streets of Khiva and speak of its Khans, of the history of its flattened turquoise minaret that was meant to reach seventy or eighty meters but ended up only twenty-nine. And of how the form of the city is, in fact, relatively modern: a construction shaped between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. But we shall speak of that in time.
For today takes his leave, the narrator,
for his students are waiting.
